December 2004 Newsletter - Holiday Shoppers consider a household shredder
December 2004 Newsletter - A crosscut shredder for the house a worthwhile investment
As this holiday season approaches, many shoppers are searching for the perfect holiday gift. What most shoppers do not know, is that this is the time of year where identity theft increases. Most shoppers simply discard their receipts and think nothing about identity theft. The most affordable and easy solution to protect against ID theft is to purchase a crosscut paper shredder. A worthwhile investment, paper shredders help citizens safeguard against mistaken identity because they effectively destroy documents which are impossible to piece together once they have been shredded.
Surprisingly, most households do not own a paper shredder and typically discard "junk mail" or receipts into the trash can. Along with the junk mail, credit card applications are easily thrown away without first shredding. As you can image, dumpster divers love to find unshredded material of which they can use! In some cases, dumpster divers fill out the credit applications and apply for a credit card using the identity of someone else. A path of identity theft begins and a household member's identity has been compromised. This household member may end up spending at least one year trying to clear up their record and track down the criminal who stole their identity.
In hindsight, this terrible situation could have been avoided if simple precaution measures were taken. Sadly, identity theft is a real, serious issue in the United States and the above story is an excellent example. To combat this problem, households should seriously consider buying a crosscut shredder. Shredders are a very effective and worthwhile investment to make since they eliminate any chance of getting your identity stolen.
